"Silverpath saved me over $5,000 during my first year of retirement."

Many Medicare beneficiaries are surprised to learn that their Medicare premiums can be affected by their income. This adjustment, known as the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA), applies to both Medicare Part B and Medicare Part D. The Social Security Administration determines IRMAA based on a beneficiary's modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) reported on their tax return from two years prior. As income rises above certain thresholds, additional monthly premium surcharges are added to Medicare coverage costs.

While IRMAA is often associated with high-income retirees, it can also affect individuals who experience significant one-time income events such as retirement account withdrawals, property sales, business transactions, or other unexpected increases in taxable income. In many cases, beneficiaries are unaware that these events can trigger higher Medicare premiums until they receive a notice from Social Security informing them of the adjustment.

Fortunately, not every IRMAA determination is final. Certain life-changing events—including retirement, reduction in work hours, loss of income-producing property, divorce, or the death of a spouse—may qualify a beneficiary for a review and possible reduction of their IRMAA assessment. Understanding how Medicare premiums are calculated and knowing when an appeal may be appropriate can potentially save beneficiaries hundreds or even thousands of dollars per year. Working with an experienced Medicare advisor can help identify these opportunities and ensure that beneficiaries pay only what they are required to pay under Medicare rules.

The Medicare Savings Program (MSP) can be one of the most effective ways for Medicare beneficiaries with limited income and assets to reduce healthcare costs. MSPs may help pay Medicare Part B premiums and, in some cases, other Medicare cost-sharing expenses, potentially saving beneficiaries thousands of dollars each year.

Because eligibility rules and benefits can vary, working with a knowledgeable Medicare agent is important. An experienced advisor can help identify potential MSP eligibility, explain how it coordinates with Medicare and Medicaid benefits, and ensure beneficiaries receive all the assistance available to them. The right guidance can lead to meaningful savings and improved access to healthcare.

"Thank you again for the remarkable plans and benefits!"

As her 65th birthday approached, Margaret began receiving a flood of Medicare mailers, advertisements, and phone calls. She quickly realized that enrolling in Medicare involved much more than simply signing up for Parts A and B. Between Medicare Supplement plans, Medicare Advantage plans, and Part D prescription drug coverage, she wasn't sure where to begin or how to determine which option best fit her needs.

Our team conducted a personalized Medicare consultation to review all of the plans available in Margaret’s zip code. Together, we compared Medicare Supplement plans and Medicare Advantage plans, reviewed prescription drug coverage options, verified access to her preferred doctors and hospitals, and analyzed her current medications to estimate annual costs. We explained the advantages and tradeoffs of each approach so she could make a decision based on facts rather than marketing materials or recommendations from friends.

By the end of the process, Margaret had a clear understanding of her Medicare choices and selected coverage that aligned with both her healthcare needs and budget. More importantly, she felt confident knowing she had reviewed all available options and made an informed decision. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by Medicare, she entered retirement with a plan designed specifically for her situation.
